Kid Cook Gadgets - Is Your Kitchen Child-Proof or Child-Friendly?

By The Kid Can Cook (Visit website)

Cooking with Kids

I never thought that I lacked imagination but when I began this little blog only a month or so ago, I really thought that what X and I were doing in the kitchen was revolutionary. Well, to my extreme pleasure, since we began this blog journey, I have discovered that no, I'm not the only crazy mom out there who cooks with her toddler. Whew! What a relief! So to all of you out there who are cooking with your kids, I salute you. And to those of you who are not quite convinced this is such a good idea, I offer you this:

Okay - that's not all I have to offer. I've found some amazing resources out there for parents who want to cook with their kids. And as if we need reminding of why it is so important for kids to get to know their food, a great article came out this past week. It was an interview with Jamie Oliver in which he points to the obesity crisis in America and makes the link between a reliance on prepared and restaurant foods and this trend. "You've got two or three generations of non-cooks like we have in England or America" he says "you just wish that there was food education in every school." Of course, it is even better if that education on food and nutrition can start at home.

X helps the Dad with the dishes using his kitchen helper stoolOne of my favorite articles on how you can make your kitchen more child-friendly is written by Andrea Coventry and was featured over at Mommy Moment. In her article, Andrea outlines a few ways you can prepare your kitchen (and yourself) for cooking with your kid. Andrea, who is a certified Montessori guide for ages 3-6 (and a Montessori kid herself), suggests that you first create a space for your child to help with kitchen prep. This could be at the kitchen table, at a table of their own (that is their size) or my suggestion is incorporating a kitchen helper stool into your kitchen furniture. X loves his and it lifts him up to countertop level so that he can really get involved.

X has his own cutting board set up on the counter
so he can practice skills like cutting (with a dull knife, of course!)
Andrea also suggests creating dedicated space in the pantry and the refrigerator for your child, preferably on the lower shelves. There you can store their snacks, beverages, etc... Think of how this empowers kids, particularly when it comes to food. Having a selection of healthy things to choose from, your kid now has the ability to make his own choices at snack-time and fix it himself. Another of Andrea's suggestions, which goes along nicely with my blog post on kid-friendly cutting tools, is to equip your kitchen with kid-sized and kid-user-friendly tools. And of course, searching out kid-friendly recipes and cookbooks is a big step in the right direction.
