Ladies finger Tamarind Kootu

Ladies finger/Okra Tamarind kootu / Vendakkai puli kootu

I do not know if anybody would have done kootu with ladies finger but this is common in my house. My kids love this very much though I am not a big fan of this. It is called puli kootu as we use tamarind for preparing this.


Ingredients needed

Ladies finger ? ½ kg
Tamarind ?small gooseberry size ball
Ripe tomatoes -3 medium size
Oil -3 tbsp
Sambar powder -1 ½ tsp
Green chillies -2 slited
Salt as required


For the seasoning

Mustard -1/2 tsp
Urad dal - 1/4 tsp
Curry leaves - little
Asafoetida - a pinch


Method

Wash ladies finger well and wipe it dry otherwise it will be sticky.
Cut it into rounds.

Heat oil in a kadai, add the ingredients for seasoning.

Then add ladies finger, turmeric powder, sambar powder, green chillies, salt and cook on medium heat.

When it is almost done, add finely chopped tomatoes and cook for a few more minutes.

Then add tamarind extract and boil well till the raw flavour goes.

You can add ¼ tsp of rice flour mixed with a little water in the end for thickening if needed.

You can add a ladle of cooked toor dal if you prefer but I did not add dal .

Serve it as a side dish for rasam or sambar.
