Nutritious TV
Today has been really great, so far. The weather is absolutely gorgeous, I had a great workout this morning, and I got to talk to one of my favorite bloggers, Shannon, on the phone! She had to do an interview with an RD, so she chose me. I'm so flattered! Thanks for the great chat Shannon :)
Just as I had expected, the majority of you liked house number two on my previous post. That is the house that I like better too. The stone on the front is what really sold me. I think it adds character to a house. Unfortunately the backyard of "my" house is tiny, has a chain-link fence (yuck), and a one car garage. The house without stone (house #1) has a huge newly fenced-in back yard, a huge two car garage, and new hardwood floors. So we are choosing house #1. Nick says we can add stone on the front later down the road, I'm holding him to that. We are signing the papers on Friday!! Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution Huntington, West Virginia was recently named the "unhealthiest city in America". Jamie Oliver, one of the Food Network's celebrity chefs (AKA, The Naked Chef), has a new show called Jamie's Food Revolution. Check out the site here for more information and some really fantastic recipes. He's basically trying to reverse the unhealthy trend in this city, starting with the schools. It really looks like a great show, and I'm excited to start watching it. I think it's going to replace the Biggest Loser in our household. The show starts on March 26th, at 9pm on ABC!Here is what Jamie's Food Revolution challenges YOU to do. ![]() If I was unemployed, and didn't really need to make money, I would be a full time volunteer! I would go around to schools and help revolutionize their cafeterias. How fun would that be?! Jamie also provides a list of recipes on his website for school cafeterias to use. I think it's fantastic. Modern Marvels; Soybean ![]() Nick got really excited the other day when he saw that the show "Modern Marvels" was doing a show dedicated to beans, and specifically the soybean. He taped it for me (bless his heart) and I watched it on Tuesday. Here are some interesting facts about the soybean: 500 billion pounds of soybeans are produced in the world, each yearSoybeans are the #1 most popular bean (legume)!80% of all edible oils and fats come from soybean oil1 acre of land is needed to produce 356 pounds of soybean protein, compared to 18 acres needed to produce the same amount of beef protein.Soymilk is made by first stripping the soybean of the fiber, and possibly other nutrients. Some soymilk producers add many of the nutrients back, to make their product more comparable to milk. However, some do not. Look for 7 grams of protein, 20% DV vitamin D, and ~10% vitamin A.When purchasing soy products, look for "whole soy" in the ingredient list. Whole soy has more fiber and healthy fats.Try to get about 25 grams of soy protein per day, for heart health and cancer prevention.Four ounces firm tofu: 10-12 grams soy protein; An 8 ounce glass of soymilk: Really depends, but look on label to be sure. Usually around 5-7 grams of soy protein One-half cup of tempeh: 16-19 grams of soy protein Coming Up Tomorrow I will post about "what to look for when buying yogurt". I realized that I was not being a good RD, and was not buying the correct type of yogurt myself. Oops. Hopefully you'll learn something form my own mistake. Thanks for reading!
