Tired legs and a set half marathon!

By Marens Morsels (Visit website)

Fitness

My legs are tired!

At physical therapy this morning I road the bike for 20 minutes on level 4 on the random setting. The workout wasn?t too challenging but it definitely loosened up my legs. Then I did lunges with a weighted ball, balancing on the ball side of the bosu, step ups with 10 pound weights, 4 sets of 15 hamstring curls at 100lbs, and 4 sets of 15 shuttle presses at 200lbs.

Luckily John, my therapist, iced and stemmed me after. My legs definitely need a rest day.

Want see my scar?

It pokes out of my running shoe. I kinda like it. Actually the liking comes and goes. Sometimes I don?t.

But it is a great reminder of something that I went through that was really hard. Challenges face us all and remembering that we made it through is important.

Great news! My therapist said I?m set to go for 1/2 marathon training! Open-mouthed smile So I?m officially in training and I can tell you all about my goal race. But first you want to see my post workout snack. It?s really cool.

Post workout snack: Chai Oats!

Last night I went to the ?Bucks after dinner with Max to kill a little sweet craving I had. I ordered a tall non-fat Chai. But I didn?t really want all of it once I had a few sips. It killed the craving so I put the remainder in the fridge for later.

After I got home from PT I made Chai oats with some of the leftovers in my fridge.

How to make Chai Oats

1/2 cup chilled chai tea latte
1/4 cup rolled oats
pinch milled flax seeds
pinch salt

I made the oats in the chai and they were delish. I sprinkled a really scant 1/4 cup Barbara?s Blend Granola on top which was the perfect frosting.

I love making super cool things with leftovers. This is a really neat idea for oats. It would be really good with some PB too. Next time.

The Rock ?n? Roll San Diego Marathon and 1/2, June 5th 2011

rock-n-roll logo

This is it! My goal race. I re-injured my ankle to the point of having to have surgery training for a half marathon. I didn?t have one picked or anything but I thought I wanted to do one. Then once I had surgery I set a goal to run a race before the one year anniversary of my slice and dice date (Aug 13th). San Diego Marathon here I come!

I mapped everything out and I have 23 weeks. I told John about my goal, my training plan and the date of the race and he thinks it will be perfect. SCORE! I?m not going to lie, I was a little nervous to tell him. But he?s 100% for it.

My training plan is a little different. I?m training for a 5k for a few weeks then sitting at 3 miles for two, just to let my ankle get used to the distance. Then I?m doing the Hal Higdon?s Novice 1/2 Marathon Training Schedule. Here?s my plan.

Untitled

The purple part is my easy 5k training. Then the first two weeks of orange I?m just running 3 miles a few times a week to make sure my body?s ready for the longer distances. I think it will be great!

Max is going to try to run it too, which makes the whole experience so much more fun. He?s a really fast runner so we won?t be running too much together but I like doing the whole thing with someone else.

I?ve picked this race because I saw them running last year at my cousin?s graduation from Point Loma High School and thought Down Town San Diego would be such a cool place to run. Especially since the course starts right by the San Diego Zoo and ends at Sea World! How awesome! I?ll be running to Free Willy. The elevation is pretty great for a first after recovery race. There are a few little hills but it?s mostly down hill. My aunt and uncle also live about 15 minutes from the start line so it?s perfect for race morning. We won?t have to stay in a hotel.

I haven?t officially registered yet. I?ll wait until March probably just to make sure training is going okay. If I need a few more weeks I think I?ll do the Seattle Rock N Roll Half instead. It?s on June 25th. It?s not as pretty of a course but I?ve always wanted to go to Seattle. That would be knocking 2 things off my goals for this year; running a race and going 1 place I really want to go.

Ahh! I?m so excited! Okay enough on races..

Lunch

I stayed in town today to get caught up on reading. I know it sounds counter productive to miss class to get reading done for the class you?re missing, but I really needed it. So I had time to meet up with my dad and brother for some lunch.

We went to our favorite local lunch spot, Bahama Grille. I?m trying to get my nutritious mini meals in so I ordered the shrimp vera cruz tacos with steamed veggies on the side instead of fries.

The veggies tasted good but I was a little disappointed since they were clearly steamed/fried in oil. I was hoping for good old plain veggies.

The tacos were delish though. Very tangy just like fish tacos should be. I ordered them with no cheese and I only ate the filling since I wasn?t wanting any carbs. The oats did me good in the carb category.

These tacos has shrimp sautéed in a spicy aioli sauce and a cabbage and cilantro salad on top with a little pico de gallo. Perfect tang and spice for me.

Very satisfying lunch.

I?m back to reading for school. I have practices from 3 to 4:45 and then 5:15 to 7, long evening. Hopefully I can knock a few politics articles off my list before practices.
