Fresh coriander leaves- 1 1/2 cups loosely packed

Urad dhal-1/2 a cup

Gram dhal / Channa dhal- 1/2 a cup

Red chillies-5

Tamarind-a small marble size

Asafoetida powder- a pinch

Salt to taste


  • Heat a pan and put in all the ingredients except coriander leaves and salt.
  • Roast till the dhal turnd brown. Turn off the heat and put in the coriander leaves and saute till it releases a fine aroma and wilts.
  • Transfer the contents to a plate and cool. Grind along with salt to a coarse powder.
  • Store in an air tight container and refrigerate.
