Paal kolukattai (steamed rice balls in coconut milk)

Rice flour – 1 cup

Coconut – 1 tablespoon/ Grated

Coconut milk – 1/4 cup

Water – 2.5 cups

Cardamom – 2-3

Jaggery – 3/4 cups

Salt – a pinch


  • Mix the rice flour and salt in a bowl. Slowly add water to make a dough. Roll out small dough balls and set aside.
  • Boil 2.5 cups of water and once it comes to a boil, add the kolukattais and cook for 15 minutes.
  • To check if the ball is cooked through, press the dough ball and if its not cooked, it will be still doughy.
  • Once the kolukattais are cooked, add the jaggery into the pot. It should start to disintegrate and thicken the liquid.
  • Give this 5 minutes and add the coconut milk, grated coconut and cardamom.
  • Let it rest for a few minutes and serve!
