Tanni saar (sweet leaf in dhal gravy)

1 cup yellow dhal

1 tsp turmeric/kunyit powder

1/2 litre of water

Add all these ingredients into a pot, boil until the dhal softens and the water dries up.

Other Ingredients

8 shallots - remove the skin

5 garlic - smashed and remove the skin

5 dried red chillies

1 tsp mustard seeds

2 sprigs curry leaves

1 whole grated coconut - add water and extract abt 3/4 litre of milk

150g cekur manis/sweet leaf - pluck out the leaves

1 calamansi lime/limau nipis - extract juice

2 tbsp olive oil

salt to taste


  • When oil is heated, fry the shallots and garlic for 2 mins after which add in the chillies,curry leaves and mustard seeds.Once the seeds starts to pop, add into the boiled dhal.
    Pour in the coconut milk, stir and let it simmer over low heat.
    Once the small bubbles appear, put in the sweet leaves/cekur manis.
    Stir the leaves inside as well as add salt and the calamansi juice. Just let it boil once and remove from heat.
