3 tomatoes, medium sized, chop fine

6-7 small Thai chillies

1/4 cup sesame seeds

1/8 cup peanuts (optional)

2 tablespoons tamarind pulp (extract)

1/2 teaspoon jeera

1 tablespoon dhaniya (coriander seeds)

1 teaspoon oil

salt to taste

For tadka/popu:

1 teaspoon oil

1/2 teaspoon mustard seed

1/2 teaspoon jeera

pinch of haldi

few curry leaves


  • In a skillet, dry roast sesame seeds, peanuts, dhaniya and jeera one after the other.
  • In a kadai, heat oil. Add chopped tomato and cook until everything becomes mushy. Cool everything.
  • Put everything in a blender or mixie, add tamarind pulp and salt. Grind to a fine paste.
  • For tadka, heat oil in a skillet, do the popu in the given order, immediately add to the ground mixture.
  • Serve warm with rice/dosa/idly.
