Greek Festival, St. Demetrios, Tucson, AZ
St. Demetrios, in Tucson, hosts a Greek Festival that is a must do on the Tucson social and culinary calendar. Classes on cooking, dance, archeology, and culture, as well as live music, round out the selection of food booths. The ladies in the photo above are preparing Laukoumades, an airy, light, deep-fried dough, served after it's been dipped in a honey sauce. Tonight, I ventured beyond my usual gyro to try Saganaki, a salty cheese, battered and pan fried, then given the flambee treatment with Greek brandy and lemon juice. This was served with warm, freshly made pita. Heavenly! I was at St. Demetrios tonight chaperoning the confirmation class from our church. Part of their two semester curriculum includes visiting and learning about other faith communities and their traditions as well as our own. In addition to the fantastic food, our evening included a tour of the Sanctuary and an interesting, interactive discussion about the history and traditions of the Orthodox Church. related searches : Greek
