What materials can be used in the air fryer?

The air fryer, is already present in many kitchens. And no wonder, since it allows cooking in a healthier and more economical way. It consumes much less energy than a conventional oven and allows us to prepare recipes, such as crispy French fries, without using so much oil or fat. However, one of the most frequently asked questions is: What materials can I use to cook safely in the air fryer without damaging the appliance?

Although you can place the ingredients directly in the basket, there are much more hygienic and safer methods to cook them. By using some of these containers or materials, you will avoid the constant cleaning of the basket and the wear and tear of the non-stick material that covers it, thus prolonging the life of your appliance.

These are the materials that you can safely use in the air fryer:

1. Heat resistant glass

Oven-safe glass containers are also suitable for the air fryer. These are usually made of tempered glass, also called refractory, or borosilicate, materials that can withstand high temperatures without the risk of breaking. Make sure that the glass has these characteristics before use.

2. Sulfurized paper (baking or parchment paper)

Baking paper is an excellent option, as it is non-stick and withstands high temperatures. However, it is important to place it correctly: never put it in the fryer without food on top, since the paper, being light, could lift and touch the heating elements, which could cause a fire. Always use it with food that will keep it in place. Nowadays, you can find in the market specific paper molds for air fryers.

3. Metal molds

The metal, stainless steel or aluminum pans that you normally use for baking are also safe for the air fryer. They are ideal for preparing desserts or foods that require a firmer structure, such as tartlets or quiches.

4. Silicone molds

The food-grade silicone molds are suitable for cooking in the air fryer, as they are heat resistant. They are perfect for making small desserts (such as muffins or cupcakes) or even for cooking several dishes at the same time. Another advantage is that, being flexible, they allow easy demolding and are very easy to clean.

5. Heat-resistant ceramic

Ceramic pans and molds can be used in the air fryer as long as they are oven safe. Ceramic distributes heat well and is ideal for gratins or cooking food evenly. If you want to cook individual portions, such as cocotte eggs, using a ramekin is an excellent choice.

6. Aluminum foil

Aluminum foil is safe to use in the air fryer, as long as it is used correctly. It should never completely cover the bottom of the basket, as it will block the circulation of hot air. You can use it to wrap food (in the manner of papillote) or to place it on the bottom of the basket, but always make sure that it does not block the circulation of hot air, as this could cause damage to the appliance or pose a safety risk.

What about plastic containers?

No. Never put a plastic cup in the air fryer, as it may melt due to the high temperatures.

Time to put on your apron

As you have seen, using the right materials you can prepare an infinite number of recipes safely and with delicious results. In short, remember that if a mold or container is suitable for cooking in a conventional oven, it is also suitable for the air fryer.
