Pain d’epices, an old classic recipe to explore french gastronomy. The texture is almost like a cake, so it is perfect for a toast in the morning or as an appetizer. Comforting, sweet and fragrant, it is a must!


Number of serving: 6
150 ml whole  milk

100 gr honey

100 gr butter

200 gr all-purpose flour

5 gr baking powder

120 gr packed brown sugar

1 egg

pinch of salt

6 gr ground cinnamon

1  clove

2 gr ginger

50 gr candied orange peel


Bread loaf pan (25 cm)


  • Step 1 - French spice cake
    In a bowl combine: ground cinnamon, ginger, clove and pinch of salt.
  • Step 2 - French spice cake
    In a saucepan combine milk + butter + honey. Cook and stir over low heat until everything is dissolved. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Step 3 - French spice cake
    In a large bowl, whisk baking powder + flour + brown sugar and add the spice mix. Stir until just combined.
  • Step 4 - French spice cake
    In the middle, make a hole. Pour the milk mixture into it. Stir well.
  • Step 5 - French spice cake
    Add the candied orange peel. Transfer to a greased loaf pan. Bake 30 min 180ºC or a toothpick inserted into the centers comes out clean.
  • It´s ready!
