Ingredients

Bar Ingredients:
- 1 cup butter (2 sticks) at room temp.
- 2 cups of sugar
- 4 eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 5 cups flour
- 1 teaspoonsalt
- 1/2 teaspoon. of baking soda

Frosting Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup butter at room temp
- 1/2 cup of shortening
- 1 teaspoonvanilla
- 1 teaspoon. of salt
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 5 tablespoons milk
- food colouring (optional)

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 375F. Grease a 13x18 jelly roll sheet. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking soda. Set aside.

Step 2

In another large bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy (2-3 minutes). Add the eggs on at a time, beating well after each addition.

Step 3

Add the vanilla (or almond) and beat to incorporate. Add the flour mixture and beat/mix until just combined. Be careful not to over mix.

Step 4

Spread into the greased sheet, try to make it as even as possible. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting.

Step 5

Prepare the frosting: In a large bowl, beat the butter and shortening together until smooth. Add the salt and vanilla. Slowly add the powdered sugar in 1-cup increments. Add the milk and food colouring if using. Beat until it has a nice, spreadable consistency.

Step 6

Spread over the cooled bars and decorate if desired.
