No-fuss homemade ice cream and sorbet ideas to stay cool all summer. Quick, delicious, simple
As soon as the temperatures rise, there’s one thing everyone agrees on when it comes to dessert: a delicious homemade ice cream :)
But don’t worry: no need to bring out the big guns here! Ice cream maker, thermometer, complicated prep… let’s leave all that aside. What we love are simple, fresh, indulgent recipes and above all, ones that are easy to make again whenever the craving for a frozen treat strikes.
Because yes, making homemade ice cream or sorbet isn’t just for the pros. With a few ripe fruits, some yogurt, a little cream, frozen bananas, or even just three ingredients, you can already work little wonders. And between us, when it’s hot out, pulling a homemade ice cream out of the freezer feels like a little victory ;)
Ice cream without an ice cream maker: our best summer friends
People often think you absolutely need an ice cream maker to make homemade ice cream. But in reality… not at all! Some recipes are made with well-whipped cream, condensed milk, yogurt, or blended fruit. Just pour everything into a container, pop it in the freezer, and a few hours later, your dessert is ready.
A little tip from Petitchef: Take your ice cream out of the freezer a few minutes before serving. It’ll be easier to scoop and much more enjoyable to eat. And if you want to add an even more indulgent touch, a few chocolate shavings, fresh fruit, or homemade fruit sauce will do the trick perfectly :)
Fruit sorbets: freshness in its simplest form
On days when you’re craving something truly refreshing, nothing beats a fruit sorbet. Mango, lemon, kiwi, coconut… it often takes just a few ingredients to make a light, colorful, and flavorful dessert.
It’s also a great way to use up fruit that’s a little too ripe. Instead of letting them go bad in the trash, cut them up, freeze them, then blend them with a little lemon juice or syrup. The result: a quick sorbet, perfect after a barbecue, a meal on the patio, or an afternoon snack in the sun.
And the best part is that you can really customize it to your liking. More tart, more exotic, sweeter… to each their own version :)
Nice cream: the magical banana ice cream
Do you have any overripe bananas sitting in your kitchen? Perfect, don't throw them away! Slice them into rounds, put them in the freezer, and then blend them once they're completely frozen. You'll see: the texture becomes creamy, just like ice cream.
It’s called “nice cream,” and honestly, we love the idea. No need for cream, no need for eggs, no need for an ice cream maker. Just fruit, a blender, and maybe a few tasty additions: cocoa, berries, peanut butter, chocolate chips…
Yogurt ice cream: perfect for an afternoon snack
When it comes to desserts that are easy to make with kids, yogurt popsicles are a hit! They’re refreshing, simple, customizable, and perfect for an afternoon snack.
Just mix yogurt with fruit, a little honey, jam, or chocolate, then pour the mixture into molds. After a trip to the freezer, you’ll have lovely homemade popsicles to enjoy whenever the mood strikes!
Indulgent ice cream, for moments of true pleasure
Because, let's face it, sometimes you don't feel like having a light dessert. You want a real, generous, indulgent ice cream; with chocolate, vanilla, fruit sauce, whipped cream, or even a melt-in-your-mouth cake on the side.
And you know what? That’s perfectly fine, too :)
Ice cream is also the dessert of choice for family meals, sunny Sundays, summer birthdays, and the end of a barbecue. A “dame blanche,” a sundae, a chocolate fondant with a scoop of vanilla… it’s hard to get more comforting than that.
So, what should we make for dessert?
Ultimately, homemade ice cream and sorbet are the way to go. They’re easy to customize, perfect for using seasonal fruit, and a real treat when the warm weather arrives.
For a light treat, go for a fruity sorbet. For a quick snack, try nice cream. For a more indulgent dessert, whip up a dame blanche or a sundae. And to surprise your guests, a granita or a frozen cocktail will always make a big impression.
Now that you know all this, all that’s left to do is make some room in the freezer… and grab your spoons :)
